what is the aim?
to prevent recidivism by modifying the behaviour of the criminals

how does it work?
tokens (secondary reinforcers) are given for desirable behaviour e.g. no aggression for a day. these tokens can be exchanged for primary reinforcers e.g. more family visits or cigarettes

define shaping
process that occurs where tokens become harder to achieve and what the criminal has to do to earn them becomes harder (tries to reduce dependency on tokens)

how is negative reinforcement involved?
tokens can be taken from criminals for undesirable behaviour

how can they ensure that this therapy is effective?
by the staff administering the tokens consistently and immediately

three positive evaluation points
cheaper, immediate, hobbs and holt (125 young criminals: half didn't do TOP and their behaviour remained constant but those who did improved)

three negative evaluation points
subjective which behaviours, unethical sometimes bc basic human rights are withheld e.g. meals, rice (participants did improve but not outside the setting)
