2 of 9
Who supported the idea and how (2)
- Paley with his analogy of the watch - Aquinas and his 5th way
3 of 9
Explain the analogy of the watch
The watch is the universe, it can be seen that it has such intelligent design and therefore must be of intelligent design, defects dont change intelligence, the structure of the universe is proof its not random
4 of 9
Explain Aquinas's 5th way
The order of inanimate objects such as the planets all working together with the universe must be the result of intelligent design as seen through the structure
5 of 9
Who rejected the idea and why (3)
Hume - cant compare with mechanics, universe like maker,it could all be by chance similar to evolution, just lucky earth was able to support life. Darwin- Theory of evolution. Mill- On Nature
6 of 9
Explain Darwins theory of evolution
Mutations produce mutations in species which leads to natural selection and survival of the fittest. Goes against Judaeo-christian idea of God as creating Humanity and teleological argument as all came about by chance as not created perfect, evolved.
7 of 9
Explain Mills 'On Nature'
Nature is cruel therefore god is cruel. The cruelty of nature goes against divine attributes. The universe cannot be perfect due to evil (Judaeo-Christian). Nothing to compare universe too
8 of 9
Summary
Problem of Evil as put forward by Mill in combination with Darwins theory of evolution makes Teleological argument obsolete and destroys idea of Judeo-Christian God. However design argument supports idea or prime mover/unmoved mover
