Skeleton
The structure of an animal that forms a frame work for the body.

Endoskeleton
A skeleton structure found inside the body. Usually found in mammals. e.g. Humans.

Hydroskeleton
The body is supported by a liquid in the body. Can be found in worms or slugs.

Exoskeleton
A skeleton structure found on the outside of a body. Normally found in insects.

Bone
Hard connective tissue forming the skeleton made of calcium and other minerals.

Compact bone
Where strength is needed.

Spongy bone
Where it needs to be light weight.

Bone marrow
Soft part in the middle of a bone. Makes and stores 95% of the body's blood cells

Muscle
A tissue composed of cells or fibers, the contraction of which produces movement in the body.

Fibril
Fine threads made up of the proteins, actin and myosin.

Antagonistic pairs
A pair of muscles that have the opposite effect on a joint. (e.g. one bends the joint, one straightens the joint.)

Tendons
Join muscles to bones. Must be inelastic. when muscles work they pull on tendons to move bones.

Ligaments
Join bones. Must be elastic.
