How are sedimentary rocks formed?
Rivers carrying sediment flow into the sea and deposit their load. Over millions of years, the sea fills up with layers of sedimentary rock.

What is a geosyncline
A geosyncline is a basin which contains sea and is formed between two tectonic plates

What were the primary effects of an earthquake you have studied?
In the Sichuan earthquake of 2008, 70,000 people were left dead and 4.3 million were homeless
3 of 12
What were the secondary effects of an earthquake you have studied?
In the Sichuan earthquake of 2008, all the roads into the region were damaged therefore there was a delay in the arrival of troops. Also, companies that traded in the area were suspended from trading on the Shanghai stock exchange.
4 of 12
What are convection currents?
The circular currents of heat in the mantle
5 of 12
What does subduction mean?
The sinking of oceanic crust under continental crust at a destructive plate margin
6 of 12
What is the difference between the focus and the epicentre?
The focus is the point WITHIN the earth where an earthquake originates whereas the epicentre is the point on the earth's crust directly above the focus.
7 of 12
What are the differences between continental and oceanic crust?
Continental is less dense that oceanic, therefore it cannot sink like oceanic crust can. Also, oceanic crust can be renewed and destroyed whereas continental crust cannot.
8 of 12
Describe how an earthquake occurs at a destructive plate boundary?
An earthquake occurs when the oceanic and continental plates move towards each other, with the heavier oceanic plate subducting under the continental. The two plates rub against each other leading to severe earthquakes.
9 of 12
Describe how a volcano occurs at a destructive plate boundary?
A volcano occurs when friction from the mantle melts the rock, pressure then builds causing magma to rise through cracks in the earth's crust.
10 of 12
Describe what happens at a collision plate boundary?
The two continental plates move towards each other, they cannot sink therefore the 2 plates crash into each other. Pressure causes the rocks to bend and fold upwards to form fold mountains this causes severe earthquakes however there are no volcanoes
