The Periodic Table

?
Group
The vertical columns in the periodic table. Group no. = no. outer shell electrons
1 of 8
Period
The rows going across the periodic table. Trends change gradually, but in the same way from one period to the next
2 of 8
Metals
Found left and centre of periodic table. Good conductors of electricity. React to give basic oxides (pH > 7)
3 of 8
Non-metals
Found to the right of periodic table. Poor conductors of electricity. React to give acidic oxides (pH> 7)
4 of 8
Group 1 (the alkali metals)
Li, Na, K etc. Very reactive in air and water
5 of 8
Group 7 (the halogens)
F, Cl, Br, I. Non-metals which exist as diatomic molecules (F2, Cl2 etc).
6 of 8
Displacement
Used to determine reactivity of halogens. A more reactive halogen will displace a less reactive halogen from a solution of it's salt
7 of 8
Group 0 (the noble gases)
He, Ne, Ar etc. Unreactive (inert) gases. Exist as single atoms (full outer shell so no need to bond).
