Research Methods: The Experimental Method Key Words

?
Aims
What the researcher(s) intent to find out in an experiment
1 of 11
Confounding Variable
A variable that varies systematically with the IV and could affect the DV, that could confound the results.
2 of 11
Debrief
To inform participants of the true nature of the experiment and return them to the same state they were in before the experiment. It is a means of dealing with ethical issues.
3 of 11
Dependant Variable
The variable that the researcher measures.
4 of 11
Independent Variable
The variable that is directly manipulated by the researcher in order to test its effect on the DV.
5 of 11
Ethical Issues
'Right and wrong.' They arise in research where researchers and participants have conflicting sets of values concerning goals, procedures, or outcomes of a study.
6 of 11
Experiment
A research Method where causal conclusions can be drawn because an IV has been manipulated to observe a causal effect on a DV
7 of 11
Hypothesis
A testable statement about the assumed relationship between two variables. Operationalisation is a key part of making a statement testable.
8 of 11
Operationalise
Ensuring that variables are in a form that can be tested. Variables need to be specified clearly to be able to be tested, for example, 'educational attainment' could be specified as 'GCSE grades in maths'
9 of 11
Standardised Procedures
A set of procedures that are the same for all participants that are able to be repeated. This includes standardised instructions.
10 of 11
Valid Consent
Participants must be given comprehensive information about the nature and purpose of the research and their role in it to allow them to make an informed decision about whether they want to participate.
