Testing for an aldehyde?
Either Tollens which will give a silver mirror, or Fehling's which will give a red-brown precipitate when added to an aldehyde. If excess aldehyde is added acidified dichromate will go from orange to green.

Testing for a methyl Ketone?
The iodoform test will give a positive result, a yellow precipitate of triodomethane.

Add sodium carbonate, if an acid is present bubbles of carbon dioxide gas will be let of.

Add Iron (III) chloride, this will give a purple solution if a phenol is present.

Add bromine water, if unsaturated it will go from brown to colourless.
