what is a tectonic hazard?
Tectonic hazards occur when the Earth's crust moves
1 of 15
what are the four types of margins?
destructive, constructive, conservative and collision margin
2 of 15
what is a destructive margin?
A destructive plate margin forms when an oceanic and continental plate move towards each other. The heavier, denser oceanic plate goes under the continental plate.
3 of 15
what is a constructive margin?
Constructive plate margins happen where plates move apart. Most of these plate margins are under the oceans. As the plates move apart, magma rises from the mantle to the Earth's surface

what is a conservative margin?
A conservative plate margin occurs where plates slide past each other in opposite directions, or in the same direction but at different speeds.
5 of 15
what is a collision margin?
it is when two continental plates move towards each other and collide. The land between the plates is forced upwards to form fold mountains
6 of 15
what are the positives of living on a plate margin?
Housing is cheaper so people living in poverty can afford it, They do not happen very often and buildings now can withstand earthquakes,
7 of 15
how can you monitor or predict an earthquake?
Laser beams can be used to detect plate movement and a seismometer is used to pick up the vibrations in the Earth's crust and a increase in vibrations may indicate a possible earthquake.
8 of 15
how can you protect a place from an earthquake?
rubber shock absorbers in the foundations to absorb the Earth tremors, steel frames that can sway during Earth movements and open areas outside of the buildings where people can assemble during an evacuation.
9 of 15
how can you plan for an earthquake?
Fasten shelves securely to walls, place large or heavy objects on lower shelves and store breakable items such as bottled foods, glass, and china in low, closed cabinets with latches.

what were the effects of the L'Aquila earthquake?
The village on Onna 30 people died 10% of the overall deaths and 60,000 people displaced
11 of 15
what were the responses of the L'Aquila earthquake?
Tent city and Government responses for example: emergency services, sniffer dogs and the army
12 of 15
what were the effects of the earthquake in Nepal?
7.5 rector scale, lots of powerful after shocks, 100 years old structures collapse in seconds and hospitals are overwhelmed
13 of 15
what were the responses of the Nepal earthquake?
food support to over 18,500 families, International aid and Over 100 search and rescue responders
14 of 15
describe the structure of the earth
The structure of the earth is divided into four major components: the crust, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core.
