Survival and response

?
What is a stimulus?
Any change in the internal or external environment i.e a change in temperature.
1 of 6
Why do organisms need to respond to stimuli?
For survival, i.e predator/prey awareness and homeostasis.
2 of 6
What is taxis?
Directional movement in response to a stimulus. For example, woodlice show a tactic response to light as they move away from a light source.
3 of 6
What is kinesis?
Non-directional movement in response to a stimulus. For example, woodlice show a kinetic response to humidity. In high humidity they move slowly and turn less often, so they stay where they are.
4 of 6
What is a choice chamber (required practical 10)?
A choice chamber is a container with different compartments, in which you can create different environmental conditions.
5 of 6
How are choice chambers used?
It can be used to investigate how animals, such as woodlice or maggots, respond to conditions like light intensity or humidity in the lab.
