Structure & Bonding

?
What are compounds?
Substances in which atoms of two or more elements are chemically combined.
1 of 11
What does chemical bonding involve?
Either transferring or sharing electrons, to form ions.
2 of 11
Atoms that lose electrons become...
Positively charged
3 of 11
Atoms that gain electrons become...
Negatively charged
4 of 11
What electronic structure is an ion similar to?
A noble gas
5 of 11
What do the elements in Group 1 of the periodic table (alkali metals) react with non-metal elements to form?
Ionic Compound
6 of 11
What do the elements in Group 7 of the periodic table (halogens) react with the alkali metals to form?
Ionic Compound
7 of 11
Give a detailed description of an Ionic Compound.
A giant structure of ions. Ionic compounds are held together by strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions. These forces act in all directions in the lattice and this is called ionic bonding.
8 of 11
When atoms share pairs of electons, what do they form?
Covalent bonds
9 of 11
What do metals consist of?
Giant structures of atoms arranged in a regular pattern.
10 of 11
What are the electrons in the highest occupied energy level of metal atoms able to do?
They are delocalised and so are free to move through the whole structure.
