Stages of language acquisition

Vegetative stage
0-4 months. Making noisies/ non-verbal sounds for example crying

Cooing stage
4-7 months. Open-mouthed vowel sounds for example "oooh"

Babbling stage
6-12 months. Consonants mixed in the vowels to string together ongoing syllable sentences "dadada"

Proto-words
9-12 months. Start organising consonants and vowels into divisible units that are not year words. For example "mama". Use of body language like pointing.

Holophrastic stage
12-18 months. The one-word stage in which first words are , often simplistic nouns. For example 'car'. Which, combined with prosody & context, are used to express meaning of an entire sentence.

Telegraphic stage
18-36 months. Make statements/ single clauses out of 2-3 words which are combined with gestures to make meaning. For example "gimmie dat".
6 of 7
Post-telegraphic stage
36 months onwards. Sentences with multiple clauses and grammar used in more complex way, can sustain conversation.
