6. What happened in Book 21?

  • Eurycleia reveals Odysseus identity to Penelope, who rushes down to Odysseus as soon as she finds out and gives the game away
  • Penelope sets up the contest of the bow and axes to finally choose her Suitor. All of them and Telemachus fail to string the bow. Odysseus tries and succeeds to the horror of the Suitors to string the bow
  • Antinous and Eurymachus both succeed in string in the bow to their delight as it proved that they were worthy of taking over as king from Odysseus
  • Odysseus falis to string the great bow to his distress because of suffering hardships for the last 20 years

7. What happens in Book 5?

  • Hermes is sent to Calypso with a message from Zeus, telling her to release Odysseus
  • Calypso manages to persuade Odysseus to marry her by promissing immortality and an ageless youth
  • Odysseus escapes from Ogygia, but is caught by Poseidon, who takes is final revenge on Odysseus for blinding his son, and drowns his in a 'tempestuous storm'
  • Telemachus calls an Assembly in Ithaca to try an get rid of the Suitors. Omens suggest that Telemachus is right in what he accuses the Suitors of, but Erymachus and Antinous persuade the elders that the situation is Penelope's fault

8. What happened in Book 16?

  • Telemachus arrives at Eumaeus' hut. Whilst Eumaeus tells Penelope of Telemachus' return Odyseus reveals himself to his 'noble son' after Athene has told him to and changed him back to Odysseus - Telemachus is initially disbelieving
  • Odysseus tries to reveal his true identity to Telemachus but he refuses to believe that his father has finally returned from Troy
  • Laertes, on a passing visit to Eumaeus finds his not there, but instead Telemachus and Odysseus. Despite the disguise, Laertes recognises Odysseus and faints from shock
  • The Suitors here of Telemachus' return despite their ambush and find him in Eumaeus' his. A fight ensues, but dispite the odds, Telemachus and Odysseus win

9. What happened in Book 19?

  • Odysseus kills Irus by a punch to the throat by accident - he didn't mean to kill him
  • Penelope accepts Anphimous' hand in marriage to the distress of Odysseus and Telemachus
  • Odysseus and Telemachus hide the weapons and Odysseus has a meeting with Penelope. Whilst Euycleia is washing Odysseus' feets she notices his scar and nearly gives the game away
  • Telemachus insites the Suitors to treat Odysseys badly to increase his wrath

10. What happened in Book 11?

  • Odysseus goes down to Hades Hall to here the prophesies of Teiresias, the blind Theban prophet, who warns Odysseus away from Hyperions cattle and tells him how to make peace with Poseidon and the other gods
  • Odysseus' men plead with him to stay for ever at Circe's palace
  • Odysseus has stayed with Circe for a year and decides that since he was the only man to escape from the Laestrygonians, and that he couldn't return to Ithaca on his own, he may as well marry Circe and become immortal
  • Odysseus conteplates commiting suicides because he feels so helpless after all his men have died and that he will never return to Ithaca

11. What happened in Book 23?

  • Athene disguised as Mentor appears and gives Penelope and Odysseus her blessing
  • Odysseus and Penelope moarn the death of their son and build an enormous burrial mound for him
  • Penelope tests Odysseus on the marriage bed and finds that Odysseus has really returned. They sleep together and the tale of Odysseus' return to an extent finishes here
  • The family of the dead Suitors find out what had happened in the palace and rushed up and a second battle occurs, but Athene and Zeus tell them to make peace

12. What happens in Book 8?

  • The Phaeacian Games and Odysseus is asked to reveal his identity so that they will know which country that they can return his too
  • Odysseus' men turned up at Phaeacia from Hades Hall to get their revenge on Odysseus for not stopping them eating the cattle of the Sun God Hyperion
  • Leodamas challenged Odysseus to a duel which Odysseus lost - this severely damaged his kleos and his chances of returning with lots of treasure
  • Athene disguised Odysseus as a fish so that he was able to escape the 'dread' Scylla - unfortunately this failed and Odysseus was devoured

13. What happened in Book 9?

  • Odysseus tells the story of his encounter with the Laestrygonians and how they destroy and eat his entire fleat
  • Odysseus tells the story of the Cicones, the Lotus Eaters and the Cyclops, Polyphemus, who calls on Poseidon to avenge himand stall Odysseus' return
  • Odysseus retells his story of his escape from Calypso by drugging her with her own wine - aided by Athene - and then swimming for freedom
  • Odysseus goes down to Hades Hall and meets 'august' Persephone, who falls in love with Odysseus and tries to persuade him with the promise of being the King of the Dead to marry her and so be made immortal

14. What happens in Book 6?

  • Athene sends Nausicaa a dream to inspire her to go and wash clothes in the river. Nausicaa finds Odysseus and she takes him to her fathers palace
  • Calypso arrives at Phaeacia to give Odysseus a final present that he left behind on her island - Odysseus is mortified that he could forget a gift of a goddess and hides in the back of Alcinous' palace
  • Alcinous gives Nausicaa's hand in marriage to Odysseus - to the outrage of the other Phaeacian nobles. Odysseus is unsure whether to accept or to insist that he wants to return back to Ithaca
  • Poseidon is angered by the xenia offered to Odysseus by the Phaeacians and encircles them in a ring of mountains as punishment and to prevent any chance of Odysseus' return to Ithaca

15. What happened in Book 10?

  • Odysseus meets Aeolus, who he stays with for a month, and gives him and bag of all the winds to enable him to reach Ithaca quicker, which his men open. Odysseus then goes to the land of the Laestrygonians and his fleet is destroyed. He meets Circe
  • Odysseus meets the Gorgan but manages to turn her to stone using the reflection on his shield
  • Antiphates, the Laestrygonian chieftan invites Odysseus and his men into his palace and provides them a feast. After their senses have been dull, he and his noble men prceedto eat all of Odysseus' men. Only Odysseus escapes
  • Aeolus refuses to give Odysseus help and tells him that the gods 'despise' him and that he shouldn't have blinded Polyphemus

16. What happened in Book 13?

  • Telemachus is visited by Athene and told to return to Ithaca
  • Odysseus' tale has finished and he is returned to Ithaca. Poseidon is furious and turn the returning Phaeacian ship into stone as a punishment to the Paeacians for being too generous with their xenia. Athene appears to Odysseus disguised as a shapard
  • Telemachus, returning from his visit to Nestor and Menelaus, meets Odysseus and accepts him on board so that the Phaeacians don't have to go all the way to Ithaca
  • Poseidon recks the Phaeacian ship in his fury and takes away the Phaeacians skill as 'seamen' as punishment for there xenia. Odysseus is left to drown, but manages to swim back to Phaeacia, where he is found by Eumaeus
