Types of conformity- COMPLIANCE
Involves ‘going along with’ the majority group in public, in order to be accepted, but this is very temporary and behaviours change back to normal as soon as the group pressure is no longer present.

Types of conformity- IDENTIFICATION
Person identifies with the group they value as they want to become part of it. Opinions change publicly even if they don’t feel the same privately.

Types of conformity- INTERNALISATION
The person genuinely accepts the majority group’s norms. It results in public & private changes in behaviour. More likely to be permanent because attitudes have become internalised.

Explanations for S.I- Informational social influence
Going along with others because you feel they are right. Most likely in situations which are new/unfamiliar. Cognitive process.

Strength for ISI: Asch’s research
Some p’s said they agreed with wrong answers when task difficulty was harder e.g lines closer together. They agreed with the majority because they gathered they had more knowledge and were correct-Shows people conform when they don’t know the answer.

Explanations for S.I- Normative social influence
Desire to behave like others and not look foolish. Emotional rather than cognitive process. Occurs in unfamiliar situations with people you want to gain social approval from.

Strength for NSI: Asch’s research
P’s were asked to explain why they agreed with the wrong answer. Some said they felt self-conscious of giving the wrong answer and feared disapproval. When asked to write down answers, conformity rates fell. Supports NSI explanation of conformity.

Agentic state explanation for obedience
Person feels no personal responsibility for their actions because they are acting on behalf of another person. Agentic shift occurs when person defers to authority figure and lets them take responsibility.

Binding factors
Reduce moral strain of obeying immoral orders. They’re aspects of the situation that allow the person to minimise or ignore the diamaging effect of their behaviour to reduce the moral strain they feel.

Legitimacy authority explanation for obedience
We obey people at the top of the social hierarchy. Authority have legitimacy through societies agreement. We hand control of our own behaviour over to authorities due to trust and upbringing

Dispositional explanation- Authoritarian personality
High levels of obedience is pathological. These people have respect for authority and are submissive to it, express contempt for those who are inferior and have conventional attitudes towards race and gender.

Cause for the authoritarian personality
Originates in childhood from overly strict parenting, expectations of absolute loyalty, impossibly high standards, extreme criticism and unconditional love.

Consequence of authoritarian personality
The experiences with parents creates hostility and resentment which cant be expressed directly against the parents as they fear reprisals. So feelings are displaced onto those seen as weaker- scapegoating. This explains hatred for socially inferior.

Adorno’s study
2000 middle class white men were investigated on their unconscious attitudes towards other racial groups. Those who scored high on f scale identified with the ‘strong’ and contemptuous of the ‘weak’. Fixed stereotypes and conscious of status.
