Adopting a groups' attitudes or behaviour in order to feel more part of it and be associated with them. Has elements of both compliance and internalisation. The behaviour and views are not likely to be shown when they leave the group.

A form of influence where an individual conforms to the expectations of a majority in order to gain approval. Associated with compliance. An important condition for this to occur is the individual must feel they are under surveillance by the group.

A form of influence which is the result of a desire to be correct. An example of internalisation as the individual accepts the groups views or behaviours as correct both publicly and privately.

Asch Research (1956)
123 male undergraduates, had to match a line to the 'standard line', 12 out of 28 trials confederates gave incorrect answer. Average conformity rate was 33%, demonstrated compliance.

Variables affecting conformity - group size
Group size - little conformity with 1 or 2 confederates, (3 increased it by about 30%), further increases made little difference.

Real participant given support, conformity levels dropped significantly (from 33% to 5.5%)
