Where do side stretches start?
Grade 2

How does it develop through the grades?
G2: teaches difference between side stretch and side bend
G3: both arms are above head and 2 side stretches are performed consecutively, which are strengthening
G4: combine forward and side stretch (requires more memory and strength), side stretch is 2 co

How would you teach a side stretch?
Start with sitting on floor cross-legged (pelvis is in-line, less gravity to work against -more challenging to stand as requires more strength and head is heaviest part of body)
Teaching methods:
imagery -painting a rainbow with finger tips
resource -knee

What is the difference between a side stretch and a side bend?
Side stretch: strengthening, lead with finger tips, breathe in
Side bend: loosening, lead with head, breathe out (weight)

Common faults?
Alignment of hips -sticking hip out (no stable base)
Not lengthening both sides equally -arm isn't taking them over
Alignment of shoulders -raised shoulders or shoulders not square (arm is reaching over)

Teaching methods to correct?
Imagery: paining a rainbow with fingertips, shining lights from shoulders and hips, thinking of lengthening upwards (hips, arm), weights on shoulders, string lifting body so it moves as one
Resource: theraband under knees or parallel arm alignment to feel
