What is mitochondria ?
Where respiration occurs .
1 of 18
Where is the mitochondria located?
In the cytoplasm of the cell.
2 of 18
2 examples of cells that have lots of mitochondria?
Liver and muscle cells.
3 of 18
Why do liver cells have lots of mitochondria?
Because it carries out lots of functions , so it needs lots of energy.
4 of 18
Why do muscel cells have lots of mitochondria?
Becuase they need to contract , so it need lots of energy.
5 of 18
What are ribosomes?
The site of protein synthesis.
6 of 18
where are ribosomes found?
In the cytomplasm of the cell.
7 of 18
one caracteristic that makes ribosomes different to microchondria?
It is much smaller, too small to be seen with a light microscope.
8 of 18
2 points about genes?
- They're a section of chromosome. - They code for particular proteins.
9 of 18
Describe the Structure of Dna?
-Made of 2 stands coiled together( double helix) - Each strand contains chemicals ( Bases) - There 4 types of bases, with cross links between the strands formed by pairs of bases. Each gene - different sequence of bases.
10 of 18
Explain how protein is made?
Portein is made in cytoplasm, But Dna can't leave nucleus , so copy of needed gene is made, that can carry the code need to make the protein to the cytoplasm. This molecule is called 'mRna'/ messenger Rna, It carries the code to ribosome.
11 of 18
Explain about the 4 bases in DNA?
4 bases are A,T,G and C. The cross links holding the 2 strands together are always between the same bases( A-T, G-C) This is calle Complementary base paring.
12 of 18
Explain what codes for proteins and why?
DNA base code controls what protein is made. Becuase DNA base sequence codes for the Animo acid sequence in the protein. Each amino acid is coded for by a sequence of 3 bases.
13 of 18
Who dicovered the stucture of DNA?
Watson and Crick
14 of 18
How did Watson and Crick discover the structure of Dna?
-Used data and information from other scientists . eg- X-ray photographs that showed the double helix structure of DNA. -And info suggesting bases occured in pairs.
15 of 18
When did Watson and Crick discover the structure of Dna?
-1953
16 of 18
When did Watson and Crick share the Nobel prize for their discovery?
-1962
17 of 18
Why was there a Dely between Watson and Crick's discovery and their reward?
-Other scientists need to check that their discovery is correct.
