What are the different percentage gases in the air?
Nitrogen: 78% Oxygen: 21% Argon+others: 1%
1 of 20
What is real difference? (analysing 2 sets of data)
There is a real differnce when the difference between the two mean values is greater than the range of each set of data.
2 of 20
What is Oxidation?
When oxygen joins with an element or compound
3 of 20
What is reduction?
When oxygen is lost from a substance.
4 of 20
What are Hydrocarbons?
Something that contains only hydrogen and carbon
5 of 20
What is incomplete combustion?
When fuel is burnt but there is not enough oxygen in the air, so carbon particulates or monoxide is produced.
6 of 20
What is wet scrubbing?
The process in which Sulfur Dioxide is removed from flue gasses using an alkaline slurry or seawater.
7 of 20
Benefits and problems with Biofuels
Renewable source, carbon zero : Lots of land needed, transportation
8 of 20
What is Crude Oil?
A think, black, sticky liquid consisting mainly of hydrocarbons.
9 of 20
What happens when the length of a hydrocarbon increases?
The boling point increases as more energy is needed to break the bonds.
10 of 20
What is fractional distilation?
The process in which hydrocarbons are seperated by their boling points.
11 of 20
What is polymerisation?
Hydrocarbons called monomers joining together to make polymers.
12 of 20
What is cross linking?
They are formed by atoms bonding between the polymer molecules so they can no longer move.(harder material)
13 of 20
What is Vulcanisation?
Sulfur atoms cause cross links between rubber molecules. Used fro car tyres. (Harder)
14 of 20
What are plasticisers? Their effect?
makes a polymer softerand more flexible . It's a small molecule that sits between the chains forcing them further apart. making the force weaker.
15 of 20
What is a Crystaline polymer?
Where the molecules of a polymer are packed tighter together to make the forces stronger. More dense and higher melting point.
16 of 20
How sedimentary rocks are formed?
Skeletons or organic waste are deposited on sea bed and over millions of years and intense pressure.
17 of 20
How solution in water mining works?
Water is pumped into a hole and the salt disolves into the water. The dissolved solution is pumped back to the surface.
18 of 20
What is produced through the electrolysis of brine?
Chlorine, Hydrogen, Sodium Hydroxide
19 of 20
Stages of our atmosphere evolving
1. Volcanic activity released co2 2. water vapour condensed, forming oceons 3.Green plants evolved 4.co2 decrease as o2 formed 5. Nitrogen was made as gasses react with oxygen
