What is a Pathogen, and name the 4 different types?
They are microorganisms that are able to cause disease- there are 4 types:
- bacterium
- virus
- fungus
- protist
1 of 20
What is a bacterium and 2 examples?
Microorganisms that have no nucleus, and they reproduce very quickly.
- salmonella
- gonorrhoea
2 of 20
What is a virus and 2 examples?
It's an infectious microbe that enters cells and reproduces
- influenza
- HIV/ AIDS
3 of 20
What is fungi and 1 example ?
Microorganisms that have hyphae e.g mold.
- Rose black spot
4 of 20
What is a protist and 2 examples?
Microorganisms that have a nucleus, and they are cells similar to human cells.
- Malaria
-Chlorella
5 of 20
What is Malaria caused by, and how can you prevent getting it?
It's caused by a mosquito bite which carries a parasite with them.
You can cover your skin up, or take anti-malarial drugs.
6 of 20
What is rose black spot, and how can you treat it?
It's a disease that plants get by developing black spots on their leaves.
You can prevent it by having good garden hygiene, and not touching the plants and passing on the disease.

What are 3 examples of pathogens being spread by direct transmission?
- direct contact (shaking hands)
- sexual contact
- Placental transfer (mother to fetus)
8 of 20
What are 3 examples of pathogens being spread by indirect transmission?
- Vectors (organisms that transfer from the pathogen host to another)
- Droplet infection (droplets of mucus that cant control the pathogen that need to be coughed/sneezed out)
- Waterborne and food ( the pathogen infects the water or food due to uncooked
9 of 20
What are 3 prevention methods for the spread of pathogens?
- Destroying vectors
- Simple hygiene methods
- Isolation and vaccines
10 of 20
What is an antibiotic?
It is a drug that fights off infections
11 of 20
What is the problem of handing out too many antibiotics?
Because the bacteria in your body can become immune to the antibiotic, therefore causing the immune antibiotic to multiply and become stronger.
12 of 20
Name 3 ways pathogens can spread:
- Air
- Water
- Direct contact
13 of 20
What is a vector?
The thing that transmits a disease
14 of 20
How do bacteria cause disease?
They produce toxins that make you sick, and the bacteria multiplies.
15 of 20
How do virus cause disease?
They kill and disrupt the cells
16 of 20
What is AIDs?
It happens when HIV is not treated and its the most advanced stage of HIV.

- What are 3 symptoms of measles?
- How do measles spread?
- How can we reduce the risk of measles?
- Measles is an infectious disease caused by a virus
- Rash, water eyes, sore throat
- By breathing in the same air as the infected person
- Vaccination

- What is HIV?
- What are 3 symptoms of HIV?
- How does HIV spread?
- How can we reduce the risk of HIV?
- A virus that attacks cells that help the body fight infection
- Fever, chills, rash
- By sexual transmission
- Have more protected sex

- What is Tobacco mosaic virus?
- What are 3 symptoms of Tobacco mosaic virus?
- How do Tobacco mosaic virus spread?
