Define schizophrenia
A long term mental health condition that causes a range of psychological symptoms. Sufferers susally have episodes where symptoms are particularly bad, followed by periods of having little/ no symptoms

What does research suggest causes schizophrenia?
A combination of physical, genetic, psychological & environmental factors

What may trigger a psychotic episode?
A stressful/ emotional life event eg. divorce, drug abuse eg. LSD or cocaine

Psychosis

Symptoms of schizophrenia are usually categorised into 2 categories, what are they?
Positive symptoms and negative symptoms

What do positive symptoms represent?
A change in behaviour or thought, such as hallucinations or delusions

What is a hallucination?
When a person experiences a sensation but there is nothing or nobody to account for it, most common is hearing voices.

What's a delusion?
A belief held with complete conviction eg. that they're being hunted by the government

What do negative symptoms represent?
A withdrawal or lack of function which you would usually expect to see in a healthy person eg. may appear emotionless

What is a CMHT and what do they do?
Community mental health team. They carry out detailed assessments of a persons symptoms.

Assessment, care plan, appointment of care coordinator, review

Give a drug treatment for schizophrenia
Antipsychotics taken orally or through injection

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), family therapy, arts therapy

Avoid drugs and alcohol, take prescribed medicine, have regular reviews, keeping healthy, stopping smoking
