What is the definition / actus reus of robbery?
'A person is guilty of robbery if he steals, and immediately before the time of doing so, and in order to do so, uses force on a person/seeks to put them in fear and then are subjected to force'

What is the mens rea of robbery?
The same as theft; dishonestly appropriate property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it

Corcoran v Anderton - D tugged at a woman's bag and succeeding in getting it from her. he dropped it and ran off without it, found guilty of robbery

Clouden - stated that snatching a bag can be robbery if the strap pulls on the V's hand or arm as it is pulled away

R v Hale - broke into a woman's home and took jewellery, afterwards tied the woman up. Convicted of robbery but appealed on the grounds of the force not being 'before or at the time' convictions upheld - continuing act

Vinall - V and a friend were cycling when encountered 3 youths, which abused V and pushed him off his bike - warned him not to try anything as they had a knife. D's walked away with the bike and left it at a bus shelter; convicted of robbery

Raphael - charged with conspiracy to rob because they took V's car by force and informed it would be given back in return for £500, court held intention was there and they were guilty

RP v DPP - held that snatching a cigarette from someones hand does not add to force

R v Zerei - forcibly took V's car, but was found a while away. The judge misdirected the jury on the intention to permanently deprive and the conviction was quashed

Dawson v James - nudged the victim so the other defendant could take his wallet, both found guilty
