what is the erosion hydraulic action?
the force of water smashing into the river banks, causes rocks to break away.
1 of 17
what is a river cross profile?
a diagram showing what the river looks straight through the middle.
2 of 17
characteristics of the lower course of a river?
gentle gradient, almost flat valley, very wide, deep channel.
3 of 17
what is a long river profile?
a diagram of the steepness of a river course.
4 of 17
what is the erosion abrasion?
when eroded material erodes the river bed by scraping along the floor.
5 of 17
at what part of a river is vertical erosion dominant? why?
at the upper course there is lots of turbulence causing material to scrape along the floor, causing vertical erosion.
6 of 17
characteristics of the middle course of a river?
medium gradient, u shaped, gentle sloping valley sides, wider, deeper channel.
7 of 17
what is the method of transportation, traction?
big rocks roll along the bottom of the river bed waring it away with the force of the water.
8 of 17
what is the erosion attrition?
when small rocks in the water hit against each other causing them to break apart.
9 of 17
what is the method of transportation, saltation?
the process of small pebbles being bounced along the river bed by the force of the water.
10 of 17
how is a waterfall formed?
an area of hard rock followed by soft, means soft rock gets eroded first causing a step witha plunge pool underneath. this continues, until the hard rock is undercut, causing an overhang and it collapses.
11 of 17
characteristics of the upper course of a river?
steep gradient, v shaped valley, narrow, shallow channel.
12 of 17
what is the method of transportation, suspension?
small material is carried along in the current of the river.
13 of 17
what is the erosion solution?
when soluble material is extracted from the river banks/bed by the water, dissolving materials such as chalk and limestone.
14 of 17
reasons for deposition...? (5 reasons)
river looses velocity, amount of river material increases, reaches the mouth, amount of water falls, water is shallower.
15 of 17
what is the method of transportation, solution?
dissolved material from river banks and bed is held in the current of the river.
16 of 17
how is a gorge formed?
a waterfall gradually moves backwards with time and in its path it leaves a clip with a sudden fall, this is called a gorge. left in the path of a waterfall.
