Anthropocentric (definition)
Human centred. Human interest is placed above other species

Dominion (definition and supporting Bible quotation)
Religious belief found in Genesis: humans are above animals and plants in the 'natural heirarchy'. God: "..and let [man] have dominion over...every living thing upon the earth".

St Francis of Assisi (theory)
The natural world is God's way of communicating with humanity. Therefore, it is a sin to disrespect it. All living things have a duty to worship God, their creator, and this is our way.

Stewardship (definition and supporting Bible quotation)
God placed us in a position of responsibility over His creation. Therefore, we should care for his creatures and plants. We are 'co-creators' with God: "The Lord God put the man in the garden of Eden to till and keep it".

The rapture and the 'end-time' (explanation, link to environmental beliefs)
The belief in the 'end-time' is based on the Bible's Revelation, which says that Jesus will return to Earth, taking believers with Him and leaving non-believers behind. The view says that the depletion of the environment is a sign of its approach.

An approach which says all life forms have intrinsic value, and so we shoudl conserve the environment for this sake.

The opposite to andropocentric. Environment-centred. Focuses on the importance of the environment and the natural world as a whole.

Eco-holism- the Gaia Hypothesis
A theory from James Lovelock. The ecosystem is one whole entity, which includes humans, but which could survive without them. It is one, whole living thing, rather than there being any kind of heriarchy.

Arne Naeuss (theory)
The earth has intrinsic value and worth and he believe in "ecological harmony and equelibrium". Humans have no right to use the environment for its own gain.

Singer (theory)
We should consider the 'preferences' of all other creatures, just as we would ourselves, loosely using Utilitarian-based ethics.

Specieism (definition)
Singer's description of the attitude anthropocentric views have. He argued that, instead, we should consider the preferences of all species equally.

The ability to feel pleasure and pain. According to Singer, all species have this.
