what is reliability?
a measure of consistency.
1 of 15
what is test-retest reliability?
when the same ppl are asked to undertake the research measure
a correlation is then created after
2 of 15
whats inter observer reliability?
what is commonly used to help with this?
the extent to which 2 or more observers agree on an answer.
behavioural categories- before the research, knowing what behaviour is classified as what
3 of 15
how can you improve reliability for questionnaires?
-identify which questions have the most impact on reliability and are sure they are to the best version so pp can answer accordingly
4 of 15
how can you improve reliability for interviews?
-using the same interviewer for all I, making sure qs are asked in a monotone voice
5 of 15
how can you improve reliability for experiments?
controlling variables, lab. experiments, standardised procedures, removing extraneous variables
6 of 15
how can you improve reliability for observations?
using behavioural categories
7 of 15
what is validity? what are the 2 types?
refers to if something is true or legitimate
internal- if results are solely affected by the independent variable
external- measure of if data can be generalised to other situations
8 of 15
whats ecological validity?
external, refers to how much the research can be applied to every day life
9 of 15
whats temporal validity?
external, refers to how research can be applied across time
10 of 15
whats assessment validity?
how it can be assessed:
1) Face validity- does the research cooer too measure what it says it measures
2) Concurrent validity- where the performance of the test in question is composed to a test that is-

continuing w previous card
-recognised and trusted within the same field
3) predictive validity- the degree to which scores on the measure are associated with scores on another measure taken at a later date
12 of 15
how to improve validity in experiments?
using a control group, single/double blind procedure (when they don't know the condition they're in), using standardised instructions
13 of 15
how to improve validity in questionnaires?
checking consistency of PP responses, keeping them anonymous,
14 of 15
how to improve validity in observations?
-removing researcher bias by using ie covert observation, using behavioural categories, qualitative methodologies, collecting data from a variety of sources (triangulation)
