What is the negative ion in molecules and complex ions?
the more electronegative element
15 of 26
What is the oxidation number of Cl in CaCl2
-1 not -2 as two Cl's and want one atom of element
16 of 26
What do redox and half eqn show?
Parts of chemical eqn involved
17 of 26
What is a reducing agent?
Electron donor. Species that causes another element to reduce. oxidised in reaction
18 of 26
What is Oxidising agent?
Electron acceptor - the species that causes another element to oxidise . is reduced itself in reaction
19 of 26
What should you do when naming oxidising and reducing agents?
Refer to full name of substance not just name of element
20 of 26
How do write a half eqn?
Work out oxidation number for element being oxidised/reduced 2. add electrons to balance charge in o.n (for reduction add e- to reactants and for oxidation add e- to products). 3. check to see sum of charges on both sides are equal)
21 of 26
How do you balance a half eqn where a substance is being oxidised or reducing and contains varying amounts of O
by adding H+, OH- ions and H2O
22 of 26
What do you use in acidic conditions?
H+ and H2O
23 of 26
Steps?
1.balance change in O.N with e- 2. Add H2O is to balance O's 3. Add H+ to balance H in H2O 4. Check charges
24 of 26
How do you make full redox eqn?
Combine a reduction half eqn with oxidation half eqn
25 of 26
How?
Must be equal numbers of electrons in the 2 half eqn's so that electrons cancel out so multiply t get equal electrons then add them together and cancel electrons
