When was the Amicable Grant rebellion?

What was it?
The tax was a levy of between one-sixth and one-tenth on the goods of the laity and one-third on goods of the clergy

Why did Henry need it?
Charles VIII (king of France) had been captured whist fighting in Italy and he wanted to take the French throne - which meant he needed to tax quickly which added to problems

21st March to be collected in June by Whitsuntide (4-6 June)

Where were the most serious risings?
The most serious rising was in Lavenham and Sudbury area of Suffolk. Faced with a band of 4,000, the Dukes of Norfolk and Suffolk dealt with it leniently

How did Wolsey attempt to salvage the situation? How did it make it worse?
Wolsey tried to solve the problems by stating that he would accept what communities could afford, rather than the sum that had been fixed. However, instead of resolving the problem it hardened attitudes - realised the government would back down

They were faced with serious risings in the area around the borders of Suffolk and Essex

Wolsey had to a ceremony of reconciliation; the four ‘principle offenders’ were brought to London and Wolsey begged the king to pardon his fellow Suffolk men for the disturbances in the Star Chamber
