Psychology unit one cognitive & social.

These falsh cards will have the theories, studies and experiments used in unit one of AS Psychology (cognative and social).

?
Definition of the Cognitive Approach
Cognition = how your brain works - any process that your brain does e.g memory.
1 of 11
Craik and Lockhart - Levels of Processing (1972) aims:
They proposed there were two different ways we remember things (rehearsal). Maintenance - when we only remember it for a little while. Elaborative - given a meaning, therefore remembered for longer.
2 of 11
Craik and Lockhart - Levels of Processing (1972) method:
This was a lab experiment, participants had to answer yes or no to a question about a word. Three types of questions were asked to determine how deeply the word was processed.
3 of 11
Craik and Lockhart - Levels of Processing (1972) results:
Words that required a structural, phonetic and/or semantic processing were recalled the most. They found that words processed at a semantic level were recalled the most. The percentages of words recognised were 17% at structural level
4 of 11
Craik and Lockhart - Levels of Processing (1972) results (2):
36% at a phonetic level and 65% at a semantic level.
5 of 11
Craik and Lockhart - Levels of Processing (1972) conclusion:
Recognition is greater when words are processed at a semantic level. Deeper processing leads to improved recognition which supports the levels of processing theory.
6 of 11
Hypothesis (independent):
Changed or manipulated by the researcher to see its effect on the dependent variable
7 of 11
Hypothesis (dependent):
Is measured by the researcher, it can change as a result of manipulation of the independent variable
8 of 11
Hypothesis (extraneous):
Variables that might effect the results as well as the independent variable, for example: some people may be tired, not have eaten or work better in a noisier environment.
9 of 11
Different types of experiments (laboratory):
These experiments are studies that are controlled in a tightly conducted environment, where the manipulator manipulates the independent variable, and the effect of this is measured by the dependent variable.
10 of 11
Different types of experiments (field):
(In contrast to a lab experiment) is carried out in a natural environment. The independent variable is still manipulated but in a way to suit the behaviour studied
