A synapse is the gap between two neurons across which a chemical signal is sent. Neurotransmitters are released by the neuron on one side of the synapse and then taken up by the neuron on the other side. It is through this process that messages are passed within the brain.
Most synapses are formed between the axon of the pre-synaptic cell and the dendrite of the post synaptic cell although this is not always the case.
