A synapse is the gap between two neurons across which a chemical signal is sent. Neurotransmitters are released by the neuron on one side of the synapse and then taken up by the neuron on the other side. It is through this process that messages are passed within the brain.

Most synapses are formed between the axon of the pre-synaptic cell and the dendrite of the post synaptic cell although this is not always the case.

Tolerance refers to the state where a drug user often needs increased dosages over time in order to achieve the same effects as they did when first using the drug.
