"Sellotape bandaged around my hand"
Imagery - like she's using the sellotape to block out the memory of his violent death. It echoes the battle field injury as well as cleaning cat hairs off the blazer. (Contrast of death in battle and domestic happiness.)
1 of 8
"Bandaged"
Verb - Reflects the injuries that were suffered during the war. It could also be a metaphor for her trying to heal the pain that she feels after losing her son.
2 of 8
"Bias, blinding ... blazer"
Repetition of "B", (alliteration) - it's hard to say mimicking the struggle that she is going through, helping the reader to understand.
3 of 8
"Playground voice"
She is lost in the past when he was a child; the present holds too much pain and her memories can only be expressed if distanced in imagery, held safely in the past.
4 of 8
"Spasms of papered, disrupting a blockade of yellow bias"
Imagery - "yellow", the sun is shining on the blazer, however "spasms" is a noun for injury (pain and suffering) and "blockade" connotes an isolated place where she is held after he's gone.
5 of 8
"Reinforcement of scarf and gloves"
Contrast between domestics and military language, showing that fighting is always on the speakers mind; clothes keep warmth and care but "reinforcements" portrays the military.
6 of 8
"Graze my nose and play Eskimos like we did when you were little"
Juxtoposition of happiness and conflict - as shows her kissing and loving him, although "graze" is a noun for hurt and pain.
7 of 8
"Leaned against it like a wishbone"
Simile - wishbones are very breakable, showing her weak and vulnerable state.
