Polymers

?
What is a polymer?
A plastic
1 of 15
What are polymers made of?
Hundreds of monomers that joins together to form long chains
2 of 15
What is a natural polymer? give an example.
A natural polymer is a plastic formed naturally and not man-made. For example rubber, silk, proyein, DNA and starch.
3 of 15
What is a synthetic polymer? give an example.
A synthetic polymer is a plastic that do not form themselves, but are man-made. For example kevlar, polyester, polystyrene, polyethene and nylon.
4 of 15
What is the name of the bond that join the monomers between atoms?
The name of the bond that joins the momemers between atoms is a covalant bond
5 of 15
In a covalabnt bond, each atom shares something with another atom. What do they share?
each atom shares one or more electrom with another atom
6 of 15
Many polymers are formed from alkenes. What is an alkene?
An alkene is a hydrocarbon molecule
7 of 15
Polymers are formes form alkenes. What is the general formula for alkenes?
Cn H2n There are twice as many hydrogens that carbons in an alkene
8 of 15
Alkenes contain at least one double covalant bond between carbon atoms. How does this double bond effect the reactivity?
The double bond makes them very reactive
9 of 15
What is the name of the shorthand version of polymerisation?
A catalyst is the name of the shorthand version for polymerisation
10 of 15
If all polystyrene foam cups produced in 1 day were all lined up, what is there enough to circle?
There is enough produced in 1 day to circle the Earth
11 of 15
What oils are used to make most plastics?
Fossil fuels
12 of 15
If a plastic item was recycled, how much more energy could it save than burning it in an incinerator?
By recycling a platic item, it could save twice as much energy than burning it in an incinerator
13 of 15
There are 6 types of plasics. Name at least 3.
PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, PS

1 plastic bottles energy saved is enough energy to power a computer for 25mins or a 60w lightbulb for how long?
1 plastics bottles energy saved is enough energy to poer a 60w lightbulb for upto 6 hours!
