how are generators powered in a power station?
an energy source is used to heat water which produces steam which turns turbines that is connceted to a turbine
1 of 10
name the four fossil fuels?
nuclear, coal, oil and gas
2 of 10
name the 7 renewable energy sources?
solar, wind, wave, tidal, hydroelctric, geothermal, biomass
3 of 10
give some advantages of solar cells?
renewable, non polluting, no fuel costs
4 of 10
give some disadvantages of solar cells?
expensive and inefficient, only works when it is sunny
5 of 10
how does geothermal energy work?
in volcanic areas, hot water and steam rise to the surface. the steam is trapped and used to drive turbines
6 of 10
what can small scale electricity productin be used for?
hydrolectricity in remote areas and solar for road signs
7 of 10
why is it a bad idea to connect small scale electricy production to the national grid?
because it is uneconomic
8 of 10
what is carbon capture?
when carbon dioxide is isolated from other gases that are produced as a result of fossil fuel combustion
9 of 10
what is carbon sequestration?
after carbon dioxide is captured it must be captured and compressed and transported to a storage site. CO2 is injected under such high pressure during sequestration that it becomes a liquid
