1.It occurs when a wave meets a boundary between a media. Some of the wave travels into the new medium and is refracted,whilst some is reflected.1.Because it allows ultrasound beams to be reflected by different boundaries at different depths.

Pre-natal scanning/breaking down kidney stones/checking blow flow in organs/imaging soft tissue/diagnosing heart problems.

Because X-rays mostly pass straight through soft tissue, so the structure of soft tissues doesn't appear on X-ray images.

X-ray images can be formed using a charged-coupled device (CCD). Explain how a CCD forms an image.
CCDs are made of grids divided into millions of identical pixels. When an X-ray hits a pixel it produces an electronic signal. This can be used by a computer to form a digital image.

CCDs can be used to produce high resolution images.

Leave the room while the X-ray image is being taken/Wear a lead apron(if they need to remain in the room)/Stand behind a lead screen.

Ultrasound is used to produce an image of a fetus in pre-natal scans. Give one advantage and one disadvantage of using ultrasound for pre-natal scans.
Advantage-Can image soft tissue/is safe for the fetus. Disadvantage-Produces a fuzzy image/not as clear as other imaging techniques/poor resolution.

X-rays are ionising so they could harm the developing fetus.

CT scans are typically used to diagnose head injuries. Explain why CT scans are particularly suited to medical imaging of the head.
X-ray used in CT scans can pass through and image both soft and hard tissue. CT scans produce high resolution images, which are necessary when diagnosing head injuries.

Explain why doctors should avoid peforming multiple CT scans on a patient.
CT scans use a high intensity X-ray beam. This means they expose the patient to lots of ionising radiation which could be dangerous to the patient's health.
