?
What is the spread of frequencies called?
Audible range.
1 of 40
What is the audible range in Hz?
20Hz to 20000Hz
2 of 40
Small objects vibrate quickly, what is their frequency and their pitch?
Both are high
3 of 40
Large objects vibrate slowly, what is their frequency and their pitch?
Both are low.
4 of 40
Define Frequency.
The number of complete vibrations a source makes per second.
5 of 40
What does the loudness of a sound depend on?
The amplitude of a vibration.
6 of 40
'The image is laterally inverted' what does this mean?
The left side and the right side appear interchanged.
7 of 40
How does an optical fibre work?
The fibres are narrow so light entering the core strikes the boundry of the two glasses at an angle greater than the critical angle. Light can then be passed down the fibre even if its curved.
8 of 40
What are the properties of a solid?
Keeps fixed shape and volume. Particles locked into place by bonds. Little space between particles. Particles cannot slide, can only vibrate.
9 of 40
What are the properties of a liquid?
Particles are close together. Particles move around slowly. Takes shape of the bottom of the container.
10 of 40
What are the properties of a gas?
Takes shape of whole container. Particles are far apart. Particles move quickly.
11 of 40
What is density?
Mass per unit volume.
12 of 40
What is the formula to find density?
density= mass/volume
13 of 40
What is the equation to find volume?
Volumae= length x width x height
14 of 40
What is the equation to find pressure?
Pressure = force/area (force in newtons. area in m2)
15 of 40
What is the equation to work out pressure difference?
Pressure = height x density
16 of 40
What is Brownian motion?
The erratic random movement of particles in a liquid, as a result of continuous bombardment from surrounding molecules.
17 of 40
What id the equation for Boyles law?
p1 x V1 = p2 x V2
18 of 40
If you wish to convert temp. from degrees celsius to Kelvin what do you do?
add 273
19 of 40
If you wish to convert temp. from kelvin to degrees celsius what do you do?
minus 273
20 of 40
What happens if you supply heat energy to particles?
They move faster and the pressue they exert on the container increases.
21 of 40
Why do particles exert pressure on the container?
Because they are constantly colliding.
22 of 40
What is momentum?
The measure of 'unstopability' of an object.
23 of 40
What is the equation to work out momentum?
momentum = mass (kg) x velocity (m/s) (p = m x v)
24 of 40
What is the law of conversion of momentum?
Momentum before and after a collision is always conserved.
25 of 40
What does perfect elastic collision mean?
No kenetic energy is lost.
26 of 40
What does absolute zero mean?
Minimun temperature possible.
27 of 40
What is the order of the electromagnetic spectrum?
Gamma, Xray, Ultra violet, Visible, Infrared, microwave, radio
28 of 40
What are the properties of the waves in the electromagnetic spectrum?
They all transfer energy. They are all transverse waves. They all travel at the soeed of light in a vaccuum. They can all me reflected, refracted and diffracted.
29 of 40
From Gamma to Radio, does the wavelength decrease or inncrease?
Increase.
30 of 40
Which ray is used for heating and night vision?
Infrared
31 of 40
Which ray is used for cooking and satellite transmission?
Microwaves.
32 of 40
Which ray do we use to see and send along optical fibres?
Visible
33 of 40
Which ray is harmful to human eyes and can cause damage to the skin?
Ultraviolet
34 of 40
Which ray do radiographers use to take x-ray pictures?
X-ray
35 of 40
What can too much exposure to UV light lead to?
Cancer and blindness.
36 of 40
What can over exposure to x-ray lead too?
Cancer.
37 of 40
How can you avoid the dangers of x-rays?
Wear protective clothing or stand behind a lead screen.
38 of 40
Which ray is used to kill micro-organisms, sterilise medical equipment and treat cancer?
Gamma rays.
39 of 40
How can gamma rays be harmful in large doses?
They can mutate cells and cause cancer.
