State the principle of superposition of waves
When two waves meet at a point the resultant displacement is equal to the sum of the two individual waves
1 of 15
What is interference
When two progressive waves continuously pass through each other they superpose and produce a resultant wave
2 of 15
What is Constructive interference
When the two progressive waves are in phase then the maximum positive displacements from each wave line up creating a resultant displacement
3 of 15
What is destructive interference
When two progressive waves are in antiphase then the maximum positive displacement of one wave lines up with the maximum negative displacement from the other wave resulting in a resultant displacement smaller than the individual waves
4 of 15
What is coherence
When waves emitted from two sources have constant phase difference and same frequency
5 of 15
What is path difference
The difference in distance travelled between two waves having travelled different distances from there source
6 of 15
Young s double sit experiment equation
λ=ax/D
7 of 15
How is a stationary wave formed
When two progressive waves with the same frequency travelling in opposite directions are superposed
8 of 15
What is a node
A point where the displacement is always zero and therefore the amplitude and intensity are zero
9 of 15
What is an antinode
The point of greatest amplitude and intensity
10 of 15
What is the separation between two antinodes or separation between two nodes equal to
Half the wavelength of the original wave progressive wave
11 of 15
Is there any net energy transfer by a stationary wave
No
12 of 15
What is a fundamental frequency
The minimum frequency of a stationary wave
13 of 15
How are all the frequencies of the harmonics in tubes closed at one end and open at the other end related
They are always an odd multiple of the fundamental frequency
14 of 15
How are all the frequencies of the harmonics in an open tube linked with the fundamental frequency
They are all integer multiples (any integer )
