Physics C

?
Cable
Two or three insulated wires surrounded by an outer layer of rubber or flexible plastic.
1 of 22
Centre of mass
The point where an object's mass may be thought to be concentrated.
2 of 22
Centripetal acceleration
The acceleration of an object moving in a circle at a constant speed. Centripetal acceleration always acts towards the centre of the circle.
3 of 22
Centripetal force
The resultant force towards the centre of a circle acting on an object moving in a circular path.
4 of 22
Chain reaction
Reactions in which one reaction causes further reactions, which in turn cause further reactions etc. A nuclear chain reaction occurs when fission neutrons cause further fission, so more fission neutrons are released and these produce further fission.
5 of 22
Charge-coupled device (CCD)
Used to record and display an image.
6 of 22
Chemical energy
Energy of an object due to chemical reactions in it.
7 of 22
Circuit breaker
An electromagnetic switch that opens and cuts the current off if too much current passes through it.
8 of 22
Compression
Squeezed together.
9 of 22
Condensation
Turning from vapour into liquid.
10 of 22
Conduction
Transfer of energy from particle to particle in matter.
11 of 22
Conductor
Material/object that conducts.
12 of 22
Conservation of energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed.
13 of 22
Conservation of momentum
In a closed system, the total momentum before an event is equal to the total momentum after the event. Momentum is conserved in any collision or explosion provided no external forces act on the objects that collide or explode.
14 of 22
Convection
Transfer of energy by the bulk movement of a heated fluid.
15 of 22
Convection current
The circular motion of matter caused buy heating in fluids.
16 of 22
Converging lens
A lens that makes light rays parallel to the principal axis converge to (i.e. meet at) a point; also referred to as a convex lens.
17 of 22
Cosmic microwave background radiation
Electromagnetic radiation that has been travelling through space ever since it was created shortly after the Big Bang.
18 of 22
Cost effectiveness
How much something gives value for money when purchase, running and other costs are taken into account.
19 of 22
Critical angle
The angle of incidence of a light ray in a transparent substance which produces refraction along the boundary.
20 of 22
Crumple zone
Region of a vehicle designed to crumple in a collision to reduce the force on the occupants.
21 of 22
CT scanner
A medical scanner that uses X-rays to produce a digital image of any cross-section through the body or a three-dimensional image of an organ.
