What do green plant use and what for?
They use light energy to make their food.

In order to make food they obtain new materials from the soil (water) and the atmosphere (carbon dioxide)

It is absorbed by the green pigment called CHLOROPHYLL

Chlorophyll is found in chloroplasts in some plant and algae.

How is the light energy used?
The light energy is used to convert the carbon dioxide into GLUCOSE. OXYGEN is released as a by-product.

Give 6 ways in which plants are adapted to carry out photosynthesis...
Leaves are broad- big surface area for light to fall on. Contain chlorophyll in chloroplasts to absorb light energy. Air spaces- allow carbon dioxide to get to the cells and oxygen to leave. PTO

Veins- bring plenty of water to the cells of the leaves. Leaves are spread out- all mesophyll cells can absorb the most light they can. Leaves are thin- light can be absorbed all the way through. PTO
Also it is a shorter distance for carbon dioxide to travel; therefore diffusion time more efficient.

A limiting factor is something that slows down or stops a reaction even when other factors are in full supply.

What can be done to the level of carbon dioxide in greenhouses?
The carbon dioxide in the air can be artificially raised and this can increase the rate of photosynthesis. Farmers use this as a method of increasing the rate of plant growth.

Why is the temperature important in photosynthesis?
Temperate has an effect on all chemical reactions.

What is the affect of temperature on the photosynthesis rate? And why?
As the temperature increases, so does the rate of photosynthesis This is because the molecules have more kinetic energy, so more collisions take place.

It is controlled by enzymes.

What are enzymes?
Enzymes are proteins that denature (destroyed) above 40 degrees C.

What affect will these enzymes have on photosynthesis?
If the temperature goes to high so the enzymes become denatured, the rate of photosynthesis willl fall because the enzymes controlling it are destroyed.

What is the glucose produced in photosynthesis used for?
Converted into insoluble starch for storage. Used for respiration. Used to produce fat or oil for storage. Used to produce cellulose, which strengthens the plant cell wall. Used for proteins (Plants also use nitrate oils absorbed in soil)
