what do elements in the s-block have
an outer shell electron configuration of s1 or s2
1 of 12
what do elements of the p-block have
an outer shell electron configuration of s2p1 to s2p6
2 of 12
what do elements of the d-block have
an outer shell electron configuration of d sub shells being filled
3 of 12
what is first ionisation energy
is the energy needed to remove 1 mole of electrons from 1 mole of gaseous atoms
4 of 12
what are the factors affecting ionisation energy
nucelar charge - atomic radius - shieldinh
5 of 12
how does atomic charge affect ionisation energy
the more protons there are in a nucelus the more positively charged the nucleus is and the stronger the attraction for the electrons
6 of 12
how does atomic radius affect ionisation energy
attraction falls off very rapidly with distance an electron closer to the nucleus will be more strongly attracted than one further away
7 of 12
what is shielding
the lessening of the pull of the nucleus by inner shells of electrons
8 of 12
how does shielding affect ionisation energy
as number of electrons between the outer electrons and the nucleus increase the outer electrons feel less attraction towards the nuclear charge
9 of 12
what does high ionisation energy mean
there is a strong attraction between the electron and the nucleus so more energy is needed to overcome the attraction and remove the electron
10 of 12
why does ionisation energy decrease as you go down a group
elements further down have more electron shells - atomic radius is larger so attraction to the nucleus is weaker. the extra shells shield the outer electrons from the attraction of the nucleus
11 of 12
why does ionisation energy increase across a period
it is harder to remove the outer electrons - due to number of protons increasing (positive charge of nucleus increases -electrons pulled closer) extra electrons are added to outer energy level no shielding is provided
