p1- the earth in the universe

?
The age of the solar system
5 thousand million years (approx.)
1 of 12
Asteroids and comets
Asteroids are lumps of rock in space, whereas comets are lumps of ice and rock orbiting the sun
2 of 12
The formation of the solar system.
gas and dust, pressure, collapse, protostar (fusion), a lot of heat+light means stars form, clumps around sun (heavier atoms-planets)
3 of 12
Fusion
hydrogen nuclei fuse to become helium. This is where a stars energy comes from.
4 of 12
Speed of light
300,000 km/s
5 of 12
Light Years
the distance light travels through a vacuum in a year. (not a toy story character...) DISTANCE!NOT TIME!!
6 of 12
Ages of earth, sun, universe
Earth: 5000 million, sun: 5000 million, universe: 14,000 million
7 of 12
Relative Brightness
brighter=closer.. but it could be quite close but not actually that bright (versa)
8 of 12
Parallax
Something appears to move when you look at it from diff places. Astronomers take pics 6 months apart (distance too small)..
9 of 12
light pollution
street lamps etc... hard and dim to see things
10 of 12
Distant galaxies are....
Moving away from us! wavelength of light changes, becomes redder= REDSHIFT. you can work out how quickly its moving away. EXPANDING!!
11 of 12
Big bang theory
used to be v compressed- still expanding now.
