Othello
Tragic Hero: A Moor (Muslim/Middle Eastern) who is an accomplished General for the Venetian army. Moved to Cyprus to fight the Turks, manipulated by Iago to kill his wife and kills himself at the end due to guilt. Power of language and stories.

Iago
Tragic Villain: A Venetian, Othello's ancient who despises Othello due to an unknown reason (motiveless malignity). Possible motives include jealousy of position/sexual jealousy/racism. Manipulates Othello to ruin his life.

Desdemona
Tragic Victim: Othello's wife who disobeys her father to marry him. Moved to Cyprus and loses her voice to the violence of the men around her. Accused of adultery and is killed in Act 5 Scene 2 by Othello.

Emilia
Tragic Victim: Iago's wife who gains her voice after the men's violence kills Desdemona. Both women represent the power men had over women and their need for equality. Killed in Act 5 Scene 2 by Iago after finding out Othello killed Desdemona.

Cassio
Scapegoat: Othello's lieutenant who is used by Iago as a scapegoat for the play's events. Gets demoted after getting drunk and participating a bar fight/Accused of sleeping with Desdemona which almost gets him killed by Othello.

Duke of Venice
Figure of authority in Venice. Respects Othello for his military experience and refers to him only as "General". Sends Othello and his army to Cyprus in Act 1 Scene 3.

Roderigo
In love with Desdemona and used by Iago to further his plot to usurp Othello and destroy him. Convinced to try and kill Cassio but is stabbed and killed by Iago in Act 5 Scene 2.

Brabantio
Desdemona's overprotective father. Venetian senator who tries to use his power to accuse Othello of using witchcraft in order to marry his daughter. Represents the racism/sexism in Venice.

Montano
Governor of Cyprus who is sent to replace Othello. His lines help the audience understand what is going on in case they get lost or confused, he also recaps important events or ideas.

Lodovico
A kinsman of Brabantio’s. He leads the Venetian party that comes to Cyprus after Othello’s victory to proclaim Cassio the new governor. Questions Othello and Cassio together, thus revealing the truth.
10 of 12
Gratiano
Brabantio's brother. He and Lodovico find Cassio wounded after Roderigo stabs him in the drunken brawl.
11 of 12
Bianca
A courtesan (prostitute), in love with Cassio. She is skilled in needlework and agrees to copy the handkerchief that Cassio gives her; then she throws it back at him, believing it is the token of his new love.
