What is Osmosis?
the movement of water molecules from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration across a partially permeable membrane
1 of 22
What is a partially permeable membrane
a membrane that has small holes in and only lets tiny molecules in
2 of 22
What is an example of a molecule that can pass?
water
3 of 22
What is osmosis a type of?
diffusion
4 of 22
PRACTICAL
------------------

What does this practical investigate?
the effect of sugar solutions on plant tissues
5 of 22
What do you first do to the potato?
cut it up into identical cylinders
6 of 22
Then what do we get?
some beakers
7 of 22
What will these beakers contain?
different sugar solutions
8 of 22
What must you make sure one has?
pure water
9 of 22
What must you also make sure another has?
concentrated sugar solution
10 of 22
What do you then do to the potato cylinders?
measure their mass
11 of 22
How many do we put in each beaker?
one
12 of 22
How long will we leave it in there?
around 24 hours
13 of 22
What do we then do to the potatoes after 24 hours?
dry them with a paper towel
14 of 22
then what do we measure?
its mass again
15 of 22
If the potato has increased in mass, what does this mean?
that it has drawn in water via osmosis
16 of 22
If it has decreased in mass, what does this mean?
it has had water drawn out of it via osmosis
17 of 22
What is the independent variable?
concentration of sugar solution
18 of 22
What is the dependent variable?
potatoes mass
19 of 22
What are some examples of control variables?
(3)
volume of solution
temperature
sugar type
20 of 22
What are two examples of errors that may take place?
potatoes arent fully dry
water evapourated from beakers
21 of 22
How can we ensure a fair test?
by repeating the investigation
22 of 22
