what is osmosis?
osmosis is a special type of diffusion. it is the movement of water from a dilute to a more concentrated source through a partially permeable membrane.
1 of 6
what are permeable membrane?
they are types of membrane that only allow some types of particles through.
2 of 6
what does isotonic mean?
if the concentration of solutes in the solution outside the cell is the same as the internal concentration, the solution is isotonic to the cell.
3 of 6
what does hypertonic mean?
if the concentration of the solutes in the solution outside the cell is higher than the internal concentration, the solution hypertonic to the cell.
4 of 6
what does hypotonic mean?
if the concentration of the solutes in the solution is lower than the internal concentration, the cell is hypotonic to the cell.
5 of 6
what can cause water to move into or out of the cell by osmosis?
differences in the concentrations of solutions inside and outside a cell cause water to move into or out of the cell.
