What two things are needed for Osmosis to take place?
two solutions with different concentrations and a partially permeable membrane to separate them
1 of 11
What is Osmosis?
Osmosis is the net movement of water from a less concentrated solution (more dilute - more water) to a more concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane.
2 of 11
What is an Isotonic Solution?
When the concentration of solutes in the solution outside the cell is the same as the internal concentration
3 of 11
What is an Hypertonic Solution?
When the concentration of solutes in the solution outside the cell is higher as the internal concentration
4 of 11
What is an Hypotonic Solution?
When the concentration of solutes in the solution outside the cell is lower as the internal concentration
5 of 11
How do you calculate the percentage change during osmosis?
Change is mass divided by mass you started with, multiplied by 100
6 of 11
Give an example of a solvent
Water
7 of 11
Give an example of a solute.
Salt, Sugar or anything that can be dissolved in water
8 of 11
What is active transport?
Movement of molecules/ions from low concentration to high concentration against a concentration gradient
9 of 11
Why is active transport important for plants?
Because they can get nutrients and ions from soil where they are in very low concentration
10 of 11
Why is active transport important for us?
So that we can absorb glucose from our food into our blood.
