I believe that question 5 of the crossword is wrong. However, I do agree that Lennie did want a puppy but since the beginning of the book you find out that Lennie's dream is to have have rabbits.
This is clear when Lennie says:
"An' live off the fatta the lan' Lennie shouted. "An' have rabbits. Go on, George!
