Neural correlates - biological explanations of SZ

?
What is the relationship between neural correlates and SZ?
Changes in the neural mechanisms and events that result in someone potentially forming symptoms of SZ.
1 of 6
What area of the brain is associated with neural correlates and how does this cause symptoms of SZ?
The ventral striatum - this area is associated with motivation and anticipation of reward. Negative symptoms such as avolition are associated with this area.
2 of 6
What is some evidence from Juckel et al that supports the idea for the ventral striatum's role in SZ?
He found a negative correlation between brain activity in the ventral striatum and the severity of negative symptoms in patients.
3 of 6
What is some evidence by Allen et al that shows the role of neural correlates and positive symptoms?
Found reduced brain activity in the superior temporal gyrus and anterior cingulate gyrus or patients that experienced auditory hallucinations - suggests that reduced activity in these areas is a neural correlate of positive symptoms of SZ.
4 of 6
What is a weakness of the neural correlate explanation for SZ?
May be that lower activity levels in Ventral striatum cause negative symptoms, or it could be that lower information passing through that area causes the lower levels - its hard to know if it is a cause of the symptoms or if it is an effect of them.
5 of 6
What is another weakness of the neural correlate explanation (environmental factors)
Does not take into account environmental factors that can also cause symptoms. eg- twin studies show concordance rates are not 100% for MZ twins so there must be other factors rather than just biological ones.
