LAN
Local Area Network: Network which covers a small geographic area, located on a single site
1 of 14
WAN
Wide Area Network:Connects LANs which are in different geographical location, Expensive, infrastructure needed.
2 of 14
Bandwidth
Maximum amount of data that can be transferred in a given time.
3 of 14
Affect of too many users
Bandwidth is shared between users, too many users or heavy use can cause congestion and slow the network down, solutoon: limit available bandwidth
4 of 14
Wired & Wireless
Wired connections are normally more reliable & faster than wireless, Fibre Optic>Copper Wireless depends on signal strengthand is affected by the range of the device, physical obstructions and the amount of interference
5 of 14
NIC
Network Interface Card: internal hardware that allows a device to be connected to a network
6 of 14
Switch
Switches connect devices on a LAN. they receive data from one device and transmit it to the device on the network with the correct MAC address
7 of 14
Routers
Transmit data between networks, always connected to at least 2 networks, direct packets to their destination
8 of 14
Wireless Access Points
A switch which allows devices to connect wirelessly, wireless connection uses radio waves to transmit information
9 of 14
Ethernet
Ethernet cables are used to connect devices in a LAN, have twisted copper wires to reduce internal interference
10 of 14
Copper Cabling
Single copper wire protected by a plastic layer and a metallic mesh which provides cabling from outside interference
11 of 14
Fibre Optic
Transmit data as light, super fast, no interference, cover large distances but very expensive
12 of 14
Client-Server Network
Managed by a server, Files are stored centrally, clients send requests to the server asking for data and a response is given
13 of 14
Peer-to-Peer Network
Don't user servers, all devices are equal, connect to eachother without a server, files stored on individual devices
