Network Topologies

?
Definition of Star Topology
A network where each node is connected to a central switch
1 of 11
Definition of Mesh Topology
A network where each node is directly connected to all other nodes.
2 of 11
Benefits of a Star Topology
If a node fails in doesn't affect the other nodes
New nodes can be added easily
Star networks tend to have a higher performance
3 of 11
Disadvantages of a Star Topology
The whole network fails if the switch in the middle fails
A wired star topology still uses a fairly large amount of wire
4 of 11
Where are Star networks used.
Large organizations
Houses
Educational Establishments
5 of 11
What are the two types of Mesh networks
full mesh topology
partial mesh topology
6 of 11
Describe a full mesh
Each node is directly connected to every other node. This enables a message to be sent along many individual routes.
7 of 11
Describe a Partial mesh
Not all nodes are connected directly to each other. A partial mesh therefore has fewer routes for a message to travel along than a full mesh but is simpler to implement.
8 of 11
Why are wired mesh networks uncommon
Using wire to connect each node uses lots and lots of wire which increases the cost dramatically
9 of 11
Advantages of a mesh topology
Messages can be received quicker if the route to the intended recipient is short
Messages should always get through as they have many possible routes on which to travel
No node is isolated
Multiple messages can be sent at once
New nodes can be added witho
10 of 11
Disadvantages of a mesh topology
full mesh networks can be impractical to set up because of the high number of connections needed
many connections require a lot of maintenance
