the arrangement in which all the nodes on a network are connected together

How is a bus topology arranged?
all nodes are directly connected directly to a central cable that runs up and down the network (the backbone). data is sent up and down the backbone until it reaches the correct node

What are the advantages of a bus topology?
- easy to connect nodes to the network
- less cabling is needed compared to a star topology making it cheaper to install

What are the disadvantages of a bus topology?
- the whole network fails if the backbone cable is broken
- terminators must be installed at the end of each backbone
- having one backbone increases the chances of data collision

When are bus topologies appropriate/used?
when a small, cheap and often temporary network is needed that does not rely on very high data transfer speeds

Why are bus topologies not widely used in modern networks?
they are not suited to dealing with large amounts of data

How is a star topology arranged?
all nodes indirectly connect to one another through one or more switches. The switch acts as a central point through which all communications are passed.

What are the advantages of a star topology?
- failure of one node or its transmission media does not affect any other nodes
- new nodes can be added to the network by simply connecting them to the switch
- higher performance as a message is only passed on to its intended node only

What are the disadvantages of a star topology?
- the whole network fails if the switch fails as no node can communicate
- a wired star topology requires a large amount of cabling which can be expensive in a large network

Where are star topologies typically used?
- in large organisations where high performance is a must
- in wireless home networks
