Chemistry C1 Metals

?
What is an Ore?
A piece of rock with enough metal in it to make it financially worthwhile extracting
1 of 15
What is a native metal?
A metal find pure
2 of 15
What metals can be extracted using carbon?
Zinc,Iron,tin,lead
3 of 15
What is extracting metals using carbon called?
Reduction
4 of 15
Why is extracting using carbon called a reduction reaction?
Because oxygen is being lost from the metal oxide and carbon dioxide forms.
5 of 15
What method is used when the metals are more reactive than carbon?
Electrolysis
6 of 15
Is electrolysis expensive or not?
Very expensive
7 of 15
What do we use to extract iron from iron oxide?and why?
We use a blast furnace because carbon is more reactive and when they reactive we get carbon dioxide and iron.
8 of 15
Why do we use phytomining and bioleaching to extract copper?
Because the ore is a low grade
9 of 15
How does phytomining work?
(1).Plants absorb copper ions from low grade ore (2).plants are burned (3)copper ions dissolved by adding sulphuric acid (4) use displacement or electrolysis to extract pure copper
10 of 15
How does Bioleaching work?
(1) Bacteria feed on low-grade ore (2) These produce a waste product that contains copper ions (3) use displacement or electrolysis to extract pure copper
11 of 15
Name 2 environmental consequences of mining?
Scar the landscape, Noisy and dusty, destroys animal habitats, large heaps of waste rock
12 of 15
Where are transition metals found?
In the centre block of the periodic table
13 of 15
Name 2 properties of Transition metals?
Good conductors of electricity and energy, Malleable
14 of 15
Name 2 uses of transition metals
Buildings-radiators, Electrical wiring
