What does the primordial soup theory state?
That billions of years ago, the Earth's atmosphere had a lot of nitrogen, hydrogen, ammonia and methane
1 of 15
What does the primordial soup theory say happens?
Lightening caused a chemical reaction between the gases causing the formation of amino acids. There became a soup of chemicals, which, when heated up, became a soup of compounds. This is when life formed
2 of 15
Who were the men that created the primordial soup theory?
Miller and Urey
3 of 15
Where do we get minerals and resources from?
The Earth's crust, oceans and atmosphere
4 of 15
Why do we fractionally distill air?
To get a variety of different products (nitrogen and oxygen) for use in the industry
5 of 15
Why is air filtered?
To remove dust
6 of 15
Explain the process of fractional distillation
After the air is filtered, it is cooled to around -200'C and becomes a liquid.
7 of 15
After this, what happens during cooling?
Durning cooling water vapour condenses and is removed. Carbon dioxide freezes and is removed.
8 of 15
After this, what happens to the liquified air?
The liquified air then enters the fractionating column and is heated slowly.
9 of 15
What happens to the remaining gases?
The remaining gases are separated by fractional distillation. Oxygen and argon come out together so another column is used to separate them.
10 of 15
What does an increase in carbon dioxide cause?
Global warming - a type of climate change
11 of 15
What are the oceans a natural store of?
Carbon dioxide
12 of 15
Where do the oceans absorb carbon dioxide?
From the atmosphere
13 of 15
What does the extra carbon dioxide we're releasing do to the oceans?
Makes them too acidic
14 of 15
Why is this bad for coral and shellfish?
They won't be able to absorb any more carbon dioxide
