What biological techniques are used to study development?
EEG and MRI
1 of 11
What behavioural techniques?
Preference method and habituation
2 of 11
What does EEG do?
Measures time sensitive changes in brain activity
3 of 11
What is an ERP?
Measures of how brain activity changes in response to an event
4 of 11
What did Haan and Nelson find?
Through EEG scans, ERP responses suggested infants recognised mothers face
5 of 11
Limitations of EEG?
Takes patience to put on cap, time consuming, infants have to be still for 15 mins, testing conditions do not represent real world environment
6 of 11
What are the 2 types of MRI?
Structural and functional
7 of 11
What is functional MRI?
images of the areas of activity in the brain
8 of 11
What is structural MRI?
Slices of the brain
9 of 11
explain the preference method
A baby is presented with 2 stimuli, time looked at each measured, if it looks at one more than the other then this shows discrimination and preference towards it
10 of 11
What did Johnson find?
Using the preference he found that infants prefer the look of a normal face to a scrambled face
