Deficit theory
Male language seen as norm, whereas women's language was seen as wrong.

Dominance theory
Women's language is 'powerless' (use of tag questions, interrogatives) where male language is 'powerful' (eg use of imperatives). Men tend to interrupt more.

Difference theory
No gender is seen as superior. This theory focuses on the differences in discourse leading to miss-communication between genders.

Dynamic theory
External factors will affect language rather than gender.
